Camellias in Canberra

Snapshots of Winning Camellias at the Horticultural Society of Canberra’s Spring Bulb and Camellia Show, September 2019

One of the concluding camellia shows of the annual calendar is the Spring Bulb and Camellia Show held annually at the Lancaster Hall adjacent to the Wesley Centre in the inner south Canberra suburb of Forrest, staged by the Horticultural Society of Canberra.  This particular Show, usually held during the second or third weekend in September, enables the visitor to catch a glimpse of some ‘late bloomers’ in the Canberra region, although it can attract some good entries from the not-so-far Southern Highlands as well.  It also afforded an opportunity to showcase those blooms that were too late for the recent National Show held in Young NSW in late August.  The show can sometimes attract over 700 blooms, but as was experienced this year with other shows this year the numbers in 2019 were down to about 570 blooms.  Nonetheless the quality was very good across the board.

Next year will mark a change of venue, as the Society’s Spring Show will coincide with the Society’s hosting of the 2020 World Daffodil Convention which will be staged at Canberra’s Gold Creek Tourist Precinct.
